Become a SteelSafe Dealer / Partner

Built for Builders. Supported Like a Manufacturer Should.

SteelSafe Shelters partners with qualified builders, contractors, and regional dealers who want a dependable storm shelter line backed by proven fabrication standards and jobsite-ready installation support.

Whether you are building custom homes, managing slab schedules, or supplying products to your local market, our partner program is designed to help you deliver safer builds while keeping projects moving.

Note: SteelSafe evaluates partner requests based on market coverage, experience, and service capabilities. Not all inquiries will be approved.

Common Problems We Solve for Builders and Dealers

The demand for storm shelters is strong across Alabama and the Southeast, but many builders and contractors run into the same operational issues when sourcing shelters. SteelSafe was built to reduce those friction points with consistent manufacturing, clear installation guidance, and partner support that respects real-world schedules.

Construction Schedule Delays

When shelter delivery or placement slips, concrete and framing schedules slip with it. Our process is built to support predictable coordination and clearer timelines.

Inconsistent Supply and Lead Times

Builders need consistency from a supplier. SteelSafe focuses on repeatable fabrication standards and reliable fulfillment to support ongoing demand.

Install Complexity and Rework

Many shelters create unnecessary jobsite headaches. SteelSafe models are engineered with install practicality in mind, with guidance built for real slab and retrofit conditions.

Site Constraints and Placement Challenges

Not every project is ideal for one shelter style. We offer underground and above-ground options to fit garages, carports, interior locations, and exterior applications.

Documentation and Buyer Questions

Homeowners ask detailed questions about safety standards, construction, and installation. We provide clear product details that help you sell with confidence.

Lack of Real Partner Support

Dealers and builders do not want a one-time transaction. SteelSafe is structured to support partners with product guidance, materials, and accountability.

Who We Partner With

SteelSafe partner opportunities are a strong fit for:

  • Home Builders who want storm shelters integrated into new construction planning
  • Concrete and Foundation Contractors looking for under-slab or retrofit-ready solutions
  • General Contractors who need proven shelter options across multiple project types
  • Regional Dealers / Retailers who can support quoting, local coordination, and customer service
  • Developers who want storm shelter options for neighborhoods and community builds

Partner Advantages

Manufacturer-Direct Relationship

When you work with SteelSafe, you are working with a company that understands fabrication, installation realities, and contractor expectations. That means clearer product specs, better planning, and fewer surprises on the jobsite.

Shelter Options for Multiple Build Types

From underground garage models to above-ground safe rooms, SteelSafe offers solutions designed for different site constraints, customer needs, and construction phases. This allows you to recommend the right model instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Clear Installation Guidance

Our product line is built around practical installation methods. Partners can access install guidance and support to help streamline coordination for new builds and retrofits.

A Product That Sells Itself

Storm shelters are not a luxury add-on in Alabama. They are a high-trust purchase for families and buyers, and they often influence buying decisions in new construction homes.

Fast-Track Planning for New Construction

For builders and developers, the most common challenge is timing a shelter installation so it does not disrupt the slab schedule. SteelSafe supports a construction-friendly workflow that helps partners plan shelter placement earlier in the build cycle.

This approach is designed to support faster placement, more accurate leveling, and better coordination while equipment is already on site. The result is a smoother install process and fewer delays during critical construction phases.

If you build homes in North Alabama or surrounding markets and want shelters integrated into your process, our partner team can help you plan the right approach for your projects.

Partner Qualification

To protect customers and maintain quality across markets, SteelSafe qualifies dealer and builder partners. If you would like to be considered, request partner information and provide the details below.

Storm Shelter Fabrication and Testing

Engineered. Fabricated. Tested. Proven.

Every SteelSafe storm shelter and safe room is manufactured in our state-of-the-art fabrication facility located in Northeast Alabama. From raw steel to finished installation, we control the entire process in-house—ensuring consistent quality, precision engineering, and uncompromising safety standards.

Unlike resellers or third-party manufacturers, SteelSafe does not outsource fabrication. Every component is designed, cut, welded, coated, and inspected by our own skilled team, following strict internal quality control procedures developed through years of real-world installation experience.

In-House Fabrication Process

Each SteelSafe shelter begins with precision-cut steel components produced using advanced laser cutting equipment. This ensures consistent tolerances, proper fitment, and structural integrity across all models. Highly trained welders assemble each shelter using engineered welding sequences designed to maximize strength and durability. Every weld is completed to specification and reviewed by our quality assurance team before moving to the next stage. Once fabrication is complete, shelters move to our dedicated testing and finishing areas for verification and protection.

Weld Integrity & Dye Penetrant Testing

After fabrication, each shelter undergoes dye penetrant testing—a professional inspection method used to identify surface-level weld defects that may not be visible to the naked eye. The dye is applied to both sides of every weld and remains in place for a full 24 hours to confirm complete penetration and leak-free integrity. Shelters that do not meet our standards do not advance to the finishing stage.

This testing step is critical in ensuring long-term durability, water resistance, and structural reliability once installed underground or within a structure.

Protective Coating & Finishing

After testing, each shelter is sent to the paint department for corrosion protection and finishing. Shelters are properly cleaned, primed, and coated to protect against rust, moisture, and long-term environmental exposure. Once coating is complete, interior components—including doors, ventilation systems, and safety hardware—are installed. Before shipment, every unit receives a final quality inspection and is palletized for secure transport to the installation site.

Certified Testing & Code Compliance

SteelSafe shelters are independently tested and certified to meet or exceed nationally recognized safety standards required for residential and commercial storm protection programs. All shelter models qualify for available funding and grant programs through FEMA, ADEM, and local emergency management agencies, including:

  • Texas Tech University Wind Science, Engineering & Debris Impact Testing
  • Engineer-certified and stamped blueprints and drawings
  • Exceeds FEMA 320 & FEMA 361 storm shelter guidelines
  • Exceeds ICC-500 storm shelter requirements
  • Exceeds ASTM 330 static pressure testing standards
  • 20-year corrosion protection warranty

Manufacturing Capacity & Scalability

Our current fabrication facility is capable of producing approximately 45 shelters per day while maintaining full quality control oversight. The facility has been engineered for rapid expansion, allowing fabrication capacity to scale up to approximately 150 units per day as demand increases—without compromising workmanship or inspection standards. This scalability ensures reliable lead times for homeowners, builders, and large-volume projects across North Alabama, Southern Tennessee, and surrounding regions.

Built for Real-World Storm Protection

Every SteelSafe shelter is designed with one purpose in mind: to protect lives when severe weather strikes. Our fabrication and testing process reflects that responsibility—combining engineering precision, verified testing, and hands-on quality control to deliver storm shelters you can trust when it matters most.

Your family deserves proven, certified storm protection.

The SteelSafe Story: Built on Experience. Proven by Protection.

How SteelSafe Shelters Began

After a tornado ripped through my hometown in 2010, I started SteelSafe Shelters because I saw a clear need for reliable, locally built storm safety solutions. At first, I sourced shelters from a Midwest supplier, but it quickly became clear that relying on a third party limited quality, customization, and delivery timelines for my customers. I knew we could do better.

Building a Better Standard

We made the decision to design, test, and fabricate our own storm shelter models—right here. It was expensive and time-consuming, but it allowed us to control every detail. That commitment paid off. Between 2010 and 2021, SteelSafe sold and installed more than 4,500 shelters without a single unhappy client—something that is truly rare in this industry.

Trusted by Homeowners and Builders Alike

While we’ve always taken pride in protecting individual families, professional homebuilders soon took notice. By 2020, SteelSafe was supplying storm shelters to approximately 95% of the professional builders in North Alabama. I’m especially proud to say we never lost a single pro builder account during that time.

A Pause — and a Return

In 2021, I was approached by an out-of-town investment group interested in acquiring the business. Selling was not my plan, but after careful consideration, I agreed. Unfortunately, the new ownership did not operate the company with the same hands-on commitment my team and I had built it on. Over time, former clients began reaching out, asking if—and when—I planned to return. Due to a non-compete agreement, I couldn’t.

SteelSafe Today — and What Comes Next

In early 2025, that non-compete ended. After months of reflection, prayer, and planning, it became clear that reopening SteelSafe Shelters was the right decision. I was able to re-acquire the SteelSafe name and key assets, and several longtime team members reached out wanting to return.

We’re back—focused, experienced, and committed to being better than ever. Our mission remains the same: build storm shelters we would trust for our own families.

Features & Benefits of SteelSafe Storm Shelters

SteelSafe Shelters are engineered, fabricated, and installed to provide dependable storm protection in real-world severe weather conditions. Every feature is purpose-built to improve occupant safety, durability, and usability—based on hands-on experience and proven engineering principles.

SteelSafe Features at a Glance

FEMA 320/361 & ICC-500 compliant designs
Industry-leading anchoring standards
Dual-access entry and emergency exit system
Battery-powered ventilation and interior lighting
In-house design and fabrication
Built for long-term durability and usability

Designed for real emergencies — not just lab conditions.
Every SteelSafe shelter feature is intended to function during worst-case storm scenarios, not ideal conditions.

Designed for Maximum Occupant Protection

The SteelSafe product line was developed to deliver one of the highest levels of occupant protection available in a residential storm shelter. Design decisions focus on how shelters perform during extreme wind events, flying debris impact, and emergency access situations.

Exterior Corrosion Protection

All SteelSafe underground shelters are coated with coal tar epoxy to protect against rust and corrosion in below-grade environments. This same coating is required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for steel structures installed below the water line.

This protective coating extends the service life of the shelter and helps preserve structural integrity in varying soil and moisture conditions.

Engineered Anchoring Systems

Proper anchoring is critical to storm shelter performance. SteelSafe shelters are designed with some of the most stringent anchoring requirements in the industry.

Standard anchoring requirements include:
• Regular and Medium models: 8 pieces of #4 rebar
• Extra-Large models: 18 pieces of #4 rebar

These standards are engineered to prevent uplift, movement, or flotation during extreme storm events.

Dual-Access Entry & Emergency Exit Design

Many storm shelters rely on a single lid as the only means of entry and exit. SteelSafe underground shelters feature a primary front entry door and a secondary rear emergency exit.

Both doors open inward and remain contained within the shelter footprint. Each door can be removed by hand by two adults if necessary, providing multiple exit options even if debris blocks one opening.

Additional Emergency Access Measures

Every SteelSafe underground shelter includes a 4-foot come-along and a fabricated rear wall anchor point. In the unlikely event that debris obstructs a door, occupants have mechanical assistance available to help open an exit.

This added safety measure reflects our belief that storm shelters should be designed for worst-case scenarios—not best-case assumptions.

Ventilation & Interior Safety Systems

Every SteelSafe shelter includes a battery-powered air induction system that draws fresh air into the shelter and circulates it throughout the interior.

Standard interior systems include:

• Battery-powered air circulation system
• Fluorescent interior lighting
• Up to 24 hours of continuous operation using eight D-cell batteries

We recently had a 5x8 in-ground interior shelter installed in our garage. We couldn’t be more pleased. From the coordination during the purchase to the scheduling of the installation to the final product everything was done smoothly and professionally. The crew performed the installation in one day! This included cutting out the hole in the concrete in our existing garage, removing the concrete and dirt, positioning the shelter, pouring concrete around the shelter, finishing the concrete around the outside of the shelter, and cleaning up. We feel so much safer knowing we have an in-home shelter if a really bad storm comes. This company makes and installs a great product. I highly recommend them if you need a storm shelter.

When we moved to our new house, my wife insisted on an in-ground tornado shelter in the garage. I checked out several products, and SteelSafe was the product of highest interest. The crew worked really hard during the installation to make sure that it was installed within two days, it was installed properly, and that our home was cleaned up after they were finished. We had one hiccup where the dumpster service cracked our driveway, but Chris was very proactive in getting it resolved. We are very happy with our purchase, and recommend SteelSafe to anyone looking for an in-ground shelter. Chris and his team work very hard to make sure that the job is done quickly, the job is done well, and that the customer is very happy with all aspects of this major purchase.

I purchased a shelter from Steelsafe Shelters in 2014 and we loved it! When we decided to move, it was also a great selling feature for our house. We are now building again and plan to install another shelter in our garage. Thank y’all for a great product and easy process!

A very huge thank you to Terry and his crew for more than an outstanding job. From top to bottom they are the best team I have ever witnessed doing any kind of job. I was amazed at how clean the work area was kept while they where installing the shelter. The garage actually looked better when they finished than when they began. Again I thank you all. I will not hesitate to recommend your company to everyone.

We had an awesome experience getting our storm shelter installed in our garage today. The crew started around 9:30 and worked hard until all their hard work was complete and our garage and driveway was absolutely clean. All of the guys were very professional and friendly...we could not be more pleased. We are so glad that we decided to go with this company!

The instillation of our shelter was amazing! Terry and his crew arrived and begin working around 9:15AM. Professionalism is a perfect work to describe how Terry and crew preformed. One of crew had a broom, shovel, or hose in their hand at all time cleaning our garage during the process. I certainly would recommend Steelsafe Shelters, Albertville, to install a shelter. Terry and Chris were very delightful to work with. Anyone is welcome to contact us for a referral.

It happens so often that a customer will take the time to write about the problems that they had with a job, but not take the time to say a job has been very well done. We want to say just thank you for a job very well done. The installation went flawless. We never had any concerns as the day progressed. Everyone was very professional and they knew their job. Our garage floor looks cleaner now than when the crew arrived. :-) Without hesitation, if someone wants a referral, give them our number. We will be glad to talk to them.

Robert was very prompt and diagnosed the problem with my generator immediately. I have had my whole home generator for over 18 months and it has never activated when the electricity went out. Instead, I continually got messages on the system showing over crank or stopped alarm error. Each time this occurred I contacted the company that installed it and always followed their directions to no avail. When a friend recommended A-Lectric I called immediately and am so glad I did. This past weekend my electricity went out several times for short periods. The generator kicked on each time. I finally feel the investment in a generator is giving me peace of mind and I have someone I can call if I do have a problem. Thank you, Robert and the A-Lectric team. You are the Best!

I don't usually post comments on services, but I was left absolutely amazed at the outstanding service that I received today. I am big on customer service and the team that installed my shelter today not only installed my shelter with quality precision, attention to the tiniest details and continuous cleanliness, they did so with great attitudes and positivity despite the blistering heat. I have never seen contractors work so hard and in such a careful thoughtful way. If you need an install, I highly recommend you request the crew (Carlton, Kendal and Mike) from CNS Building Service. These guys were outstanding!

Carlton and his crew went so far beyond anything I believed as a fair expectation of a quality job I now couldn't see a project that I wouldn't just wait till he could do it. We found him and his crew to be contentious. Also the unwillingness to pass over the smallest detail was simply amazing! Feel free to use us as a reference on your product.

What a peace of mind my family now has after getting our under the ground storm shelter put in. Steel Safe Shelters was so professional and did a fabulous job on the product and the installation and clean up. It does not take up any room in our garage yet at the same time has a HUGE impact on the safety of our family!

As a professional home inspector, I researched several of the local tornado shelter installers and decided on Steel Safe to install their shelter in my home. We have had storm damage on several occasions and this gives me a great peace of mind to finally have a safe haven during bad weather. I spent all day watching the installation of my storm shelter, and the crew was more than happy to answer all my questions. I was very impressed with the attention to detail, safety design, and install integrity that went into this installation. When they were done, everything was wiped down by hand, the shelter and my garage were sparkling clean. Keep in mind, this was not an empty garage, but one full of stuff, like any normal family, and they worked around it all and kept things clean. The irony to all of this, is an hour after they left my house, the weather alert radio starts going off and we are under a tornado watch all night. Its February 2014, and North Alabama is already having tornado weather!

My family and I were extremely pleased with the efficiency and professional manner that our shelter was installed. I especially liked that the installer took the time to involve and explain the shelter to my 9 year-olds. We hope we never have to use the shelter, but if the situation presents itself, we are confident and ready.
